Notes on the Kelsall family.

[P117] HENRY KELSALL (of Reading) Henry Kelsall of Reading (circ 1470) was a clothier there but as his name and those of his married sisters show was connected with East Cheshire. He was made a burgess in 1475 and was elected to represent Reading in Parliament in 1482. He died in 1493. His will directs his body shall be buried in St.Lawrence Reading on the W. of the 'altar of fern'. He bequeathed to his brother Thomas K. his lands at Reading and also lands at Southampton which he had inherited from another brother Roger K. If Thomas K. dies, the estate was to pass to the next heir male of Thomas K. In default of these, to pass to the men named to keep up a mass in the church. In default the money to be given to the churchwardens of the Lady Chapel at Knottisford (Knutsford) Cheshire. Money is left for a stone for himself and his wife Agnes. Bequests to: I Margaret Bosden my sister and her daughters Maude and Margaret B. II Son and daughters of my brother Thomas K. III Janet Twiston, my sister. IV Charles K., son of my brother Roger; Elizabeth K, daughter of Roger, and to the "mynnchen" (Abbess) of Romsey, and Ann daughter, and Thomas K. a son - V Cousins at Knutsford, children of his sister Elizabeth Madox - "I will and charge that a tenor bell be made according to the four bells that now hang in the steeple of St.Lawrence Reading to the sum of , the scripture to be made about the same bell "Henry, the bell of Fern". The bell was erected 1498-99, and there is a record of its consecration - Has been subsequently recast but is still called 'Harry'. His grave stone still exists, but has been much mutilated and the brass stolen. It was shown to me in 1893 inside the church, under the tower over West Porch, on the right hand side - no name. From the Registers of the Church we find: 1519 Randal Kelsalis modir [?] buried. 1529 Randall Kelsall obiit 1541 Elizabeth Kelsall (Kelmshall) R.K. was probably a near relative, as he was specially excused fees for having the bell rung - For these and further details vide History of St.Lawrence Reading by Rev.
